Flintrock Farms Recognized for Environmental Excellence by US Poultry |
|
Sunday, February 05, 2012 22:17 |
Atlanta: Flintrock Farms, Lititz, PA, was one of six farms across the United States to receive the Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award during the 2012 International Poultry Expo in Atlanta. U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, based in Tucker, GA, sponsors the annual awards in recognition of exemplary environmental stewardship by family farmers engaged in poultry and egg production. (Dan Heller is the Chair of the Lancaster County Agriculture Council.) Applicants were rated in several categories, including dry litter or liquid manure management, nutrient management planning, community involvement, wildlife enhancement techniques, innovative nutrient management techniques, and participation in education or outreach programs. Applications were reviewed and farm visits conducted by a team of environmental professionals from universities, regulatory agencies, and state trade associations in selecting national winners in six regions. Flintrock Farms is operated by Daniel and Jen Heller. The farm is comprised of 80 acres in which chickens are raised, row crops are grown, and horses are boarded and trained. The farm has twelve poultry houses with a total capacity of 330,000 birds. Flintrock Farms utilizes a nutrient management plan for applying litter to their land, along with a composter for chicken mortality. Other aspects of their nutrient management plan include the implementation of a bedding recycling program and in-house compost windrowing. Their facility includes a large professionally engineered storm water management system and sediment and erosion control plan, and they have installed a large 200KW solar system on two of their poultry house roofs to generate clean energy. Flintrock Farms is also pursuing gasification and incineration of poultry litter as a source of heat for their poultry houses. To help enhance wildlife, Flintrock Farms actively plants trees to promote the wildlife habitat. Their farm is also one of ten in Pennsylvania to receive the Pennsylvania Environmental Agricultural Conservation Certification of Excellence. Flintrock Farms operates broiler houses for Tyson Foods. |

Nutrient Solutions and Opportunities for Farming Operations |
|
Sunday, February 05, 2012 20:35 |
Lancaster: On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, Penn State Cooperative Extension, Lancaster County Conservation District and the Lancaster County Agriculture Council present "Nutrient Solutions and Opportunities for Farming Operations" from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road in Lancaster. Click here for a registration form.
Keeping Lancaster County agriculture competitive in the global marketplace has been the goal of the Lancaster County Agriculture Council and its partners since its inception. The legacy of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Agriculture looms large as we think together about how to increase the scale of agriculture and still be responsible with our environmental responsibilities. This program brings together nationally-know experts to share their experience but, more importantly, to comment on examples of digester operations that are in operation, under construction, and being planned in Lancaster County. Real cases with commentary by the experts will be the way that we learn together during this event.
Leadership includes...
- James Dunn, Professor of Agricultural Economics, College of Agriculture, Penn State University
- Robert E. Graves, Professor of Agriculture Engineering in the College of Agriculture, Penn State University
- Don McNutt, District Administrator of the Lancaster County Conservation District
- Robert Monley, General Manager of Farm Pilot Project Coordination, Inc.
- Jeff Porter, Environmental Engineer with the National Resources Conservation Services of the US Department of Agriculture
- Leon Ressler, County Extension Agent for Lancaster County
Cases to be considered include...
- Anaerobic Digester (dairy only)
- Anaerobic Digester (dairy and other waste)
- Composting
- Poultry Litter Burner
- Other Nutrient Options with Infrastructure Opportunities and Challenges
Ultimately, we seek to improve the competitiveness of agriculture in the region, the quality of life in the County, and the return on investment to the farmer, the technology provider, and the community. We do this with an eye to practical solutions that will help us improve the failure rate of digesters by solving some of the infrastructure issues around connecting to the power grid and dealing with wastewater
Cost for the program is $25 for the first person from an employer and $10 for other registrants. |
