Lancaster County Wins EPA Award for Smart Growth
Monday, January 04, 2010 22:27
Los Angeles:  On the GOOD blog, Andrew Price wrote on December 3, 2009  that "the EPA just announced the winners of the 2009 Smart Growth Achievement Awards. The awards are sort of like the Oscars for sensible city planning. There are four categories: Overall Excellence in Smart Growth; Policies and Regulations; Built Projects; and Smart Growth and Green Building. And the envelope please...

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania won the Overall Excellence award. Lancaster is in the heart of Amish country and it looks like they're doing a good job of balancing growth with tradition:

One of the defining features of Envision Lancaster County is its emphasis: a balance between protecting natural resources and farmland and encouraging growth and development in appropriate areas. Using the plan's principles, the Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board and the Lancaster Farmland Trust worked together to permanently protect almost 82,000 acres of farmland."  To see the whole article, click here.

Bay Cleanup Efforts Highlighted at Ag Issue Forum
Sunday, January 03, 2010 11:15

Lancaster:  On December 11, the Ag Issues Forum of The Lancaster Chamber highlighted local and state efforts that will help the region in addressing the anti-pollution regulations that are a part of a new mandate from the federal government to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.

Some local farmers participated in a program to reduce the amount of fertilizer that they use as a part of an American Farmland Trust "Best Management Practices Challenge".  The reduction in fertilizer earned credits for putting conservation practices in place that can then be sold to other entities that are mandated to reduce discharges.  Mount Joy Boro has purchased such credits in the past.  The credits in this program were donated instead to the Lancaster Farmland Trust for their use in local conservation efforts.

Locally, the LFT has worked with farmers on no-till farming and the development of conservation plans.  The Trust specifially reaches out to Plain Sect farmers.  The goal is sustainable agriculture in Lancaster County that takes responsibility for the local role in cleaning up the Bay.
